Since WWII, we have lost more veterans to suicide on American soil than to casualties of war.
Read that again...
Let it sink in.
Our facility is located in rural Southwest Indiana—where veteran suicide rates are even HIGHER than the already staggering national average. These veteran communities are underserved and isolated.
Forgotten.
At the same time, more than 70,000 wild mustangs remain on public rangelands designed to sustain just 26,000, with another 46,000 in holding facilities. Too often, these horses are misunderstood, mishandled, and at risk of entering the slaughter pipeline.
That's where we come in. We are working at the intersection of both crises.
The Mustangs of Service program is NOT your traditional talk therapy program.
It is however a mental health program that teaches & utilizes the scientifically backed principles of brain-based horsemanship &trauma-informed equine assisted healing services with our Veterans, in the act of gentling wild Mustangs.
This form of horsemanship can be taught to & utilized by someone who has never before been around horses. And yet even the most experienced trainers & owners can also benefit from incorporating the basic tenants of brain-based horsemanship.
Teaching your horses to self-down regulate is their form of wellness & mental health, and it is equally as important for them as it is for us humans, perhaps even more so as they are prey animals who make every decision based around safety.
Through our Mustangs of Service program, veterans & wild mustangs heal together.
Our veterans learn regulation, partnership & resilience. They find peace, purpose & hope at the ranch.
Our mustangs experience patient, brain-based gentling that replaces fear with trust and sets them up for successful forever adoptions.
